When I started visiting San Antonio more often (and doing more activities than shopping) I was pleasantly surprised because the food scene is getting more interesting everyday. As a matter of fact, the Culinary Institute of America opened a branch here so new chefs graduate from the school all the time.
With all the delicious possibilities would be a shame to end up eating fast food all the time, therefore if you live in town and are looking for a place to eat or coming from out of town and want to sit and enjoy something else than McDonalds, I made a list of top restaurants in San Antonio that you can enjoy, either with family, friends or your significant other. Chef Luca della Casa and the owners of Silo are synonym of good food and this place located inside the historic Fairmont Hotel is a proof of the experience of the team. The menu is influenced by northern Italy flavors, but with a very interesting spin, so it’s difficult to pick a few choices from the menu. We tried the Arancini, eggplant Parmigiana, Capresse Fritta and Gnocci di Nonna and no more because we had to attend an event later that night. And let me tell you one thing: we are coming back to keep enjoying the rest of the menu options.
If you are addicted to Mexican pan de dulce (sweet bread), long fermented latin breads and tortas, this place is a mouth watering experience the second you open the door. The original Panadería (in Alamo Heights) is just something hard to miss, but the new one located in 301 E Houston St is bigger, with open concept bakery and some breakfast hard to skip. My favorite is rancheros Benedictinos, sort of Benedict eggs with an amazing creamy sauce on top, but you can try anything from the menu and won’t be disappointed.
3. Chart House restaurant at Tower of the Americas
The fact that is at the top of the Tower of the Americas, with revolving concept that allows you to enjoy views from San Antonio, makes me want to go back to this place owned by Tillman Fertitta (star of Billion Dollar Buyer). I enjoyed the slow roasted prime rib with champagne the first time and the hot chocolate Lava Cake. But even if you just go to the bar when the sun goes down, the view is breathtaking. When we celebrated Diego’s birthday there, we read the message “Happy Birthday, Diego” on top of the menu, a very nice touch.
4. La Frite This Belgian bistro located in Southtown is probably not new, but certainly is one of out favorites and I will tell you why: I never liked mussels but when Eduardo invited me to try the Basque mussels (prepared with white wine, Spanish chorizo, red pepper and paprika), couldn’t help but enjoy every bite. We probably have tried and loved everything from the menu.
5. Mi Tierra People don’t go to this traditional restaurant and cafe owned by the Cortez family to try gourmet food. Of course, the enchiladas rancheras, caldo del mercado and all the options are yum, but this restaurant is so alive with mariachi, painting on the walls, pan de dulce and colorful lights all over, that makes you feel that San Antonio is still part of Mexico. 8 de 365. Cuando comencé a visitar San Antonio con más frecuencia (y haciendo más que ir de compras) me sorprendió gratamente la ciudad porque el ambiente culinario se está volviendo más interesante cada día.
De hecho, el Culinary Institute of America abrió una sucursal aquí, así que nuevos chefs se gradúan todo el tiempo. Probamos el Arancini, la berenjena Parmigiana, Capresse Fritta y Gnocci di Nonna y nada más porque tuvimos que asistir a un evento más tarde esa noche. 2. La Panadería downtown
Si eres adicto al pan de dulce mexicano, panes fermentados y tortas, este lugar es una experiencia deliciosa desde el momento en que abres la puerta para entrar.
La original Panadería (en Alamo Heights) de por sí es adictiva, pero la nueva ubicada en 301 E Houston St es más grande, donde ves cómo hacen los panes y tiene algunos desayunos difíciles de dejar pasar. Me encantan rancheros Benedictinos, una especie de huevos benedictinos con una increíble salsa cremosa con chipotle en la parte superior. Si esto no es de tu agrado, básicamente puedes probar cualquier cosa del menú y no te decepcionará.
3. Chart House en la Torre de las Américas
El hecho de estar en la parte superior de la Torre de las Américas, con un concepto giratorio que permite disfrutar de las vistas de todo San Antonio, me hace querer volver a este lugar propiedad de Tillman Fertitta (estrella de Billion Dollar Buyer).
De la primera vez que fuimos me encantó el slow roasted prime rib con champaña y el Lava Cake de chocolate. Pero incluso si sólo vas al bar al atardecer, la vista es impresionante. Detalle extra: cuando celebramos el cumpleaños de Diego allí, en la parte superior del menú decía “Feliz cumpleaños, Diego”, un toque muy agradable.

Este bistro belga ubicado en Southtown probablemente no sea nuevo, pero sin duda es uno de los preferidos y te diré por qué: nunca me gustaron los mejillones, pero cuando Eduardo me invitó a probar los mejillones vascos (preparados con vino blanco, chorizo español, pimiento rojo y pimentón) disfruté cada bocado. Yo creo que ya hemos probado casi todo el menú y es súper recomendable todo lo que pedimos.
5. Mi Tierra
La gente no va a este restaurante y café tradicional propiedad de la familia Cortez para probar comida gourmet… Por supuesto, las enchiladas rancheras, el caldo del mercado y todas las opciones son deliciosas, pero este histórico lugar está tan lleno de mariachi, personajes pintados en las paredes, pan de dulce y luces de colores por todas partes, que te hace sentir que San Antonio todavía es parte de México.
